Protecting Brazilian Atlantic Forest
according to universal ecocentric ethics
WHAT WE DO
Instituto Uiraçu carries out permanent programs on Land Stewardship, Scientific Research, Environmental Education & Community Outreach, aimed at the protection of the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. The programs are divided into temporary projects and activities, and carried out at the Serra Bonita Reserve and the surrounding community of Camacan, Bahia. The General Assembly (all IU members) meets every three years to elect IU´s President for the next three-year term, revise IU´s Programs and define projects and activities to be pursued. The President appoints a team of Directors.
Since its creation, in 2001, IU has made many important achievements: the increase of the SBR to almost 8,000 protected acres; the realization of over 50 education events involving the local community and Universities; over 50 flora and fauna research and inventory projects, finished or underway, some revealing species new to science); and the spontaneous return of many animal species to Serra Bonita, some previously considered locally extinct!
